Senator Alexander’s newsletter arrived in my box this week, taking credit for passing the 21st Century Cures Act to fund research for things like organ transplants, HIV/AIDS vaccines, Alzheimer’s cures, and treatment for the scourge of opioid painkiller addiction.
Perhaps our senator can explain to us precisely what good it does us to have cures for these things when he and Senator Corker just voted in the dead of night to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which means insurance companies will once again be able to engage in the barbaric practice of denying coverage for pre-existing conditions like — wait for it — organ transplants, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s, and opioid addiction.
Does Alexander not understand that a cure no one can use might as well be no cure at all?
Where is the Republican plan that will keep 526,000 Tennesseans from losing their health care if the ACA is repealed without a replacement? At this time next year, will his constituents be on the street, pressing their face against the glass to look at these “21st century cures” and wondering whether they’re going to lose their house if their spouse or their children end up needing one of them?
